Originally designed as a Type B(U) Package to the IAEA SSR-6  2018 Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material.

Certification

Currently certified as a Type A package for the transport of irradiated metal samples in solid form held within sample holder assembly.

Description

The SAFKEG^® 2835C package is designed to be robust and simple to use. The packaging consists of a stainless steel Outer Keg (Design No 2835) which carries a stainless steel and depleted uranium (DU) shielded Containment Vessel (CV), Design No 2784 within a aluminium carrier and shock absorbing cork lid.

The Outer Keg has a fabricated stainless steel body with a large stainless steel lined cavity and a bolted stainless steel lid. The space provided between the fabricated body and the lined cavity is filled with a phenolic resin foam, Thermally Insulating Shock Absorbing Foam (TISAF). The 2784 CV is a DU shielded vessel fabricated from stainless steel incorporating a bolted lid fitted with double O–ring seals.

Containment / Shielding

The 2784 CV provides the containment system and shielding of the package. This incorporates a verifiable double O-ring seal configuration. The interspace between the inner and outer seal facilitates leakage testing to ensure that the seals achieve the prescribed levels of leak tightness.

Approved Contents

• Solid form only.
• The contents include alpha and beta emitting nuclides, plus low energy gamma nuclides, consisting of up to A2 quantity for non-special form material and A1 for special form material. Note the actual limit be reduced due to the nature of the contents (i.e. from shielding requirements).
