Designed as a re-usable Type A package for the shipment of liquids (Design No CU112B only) or solids (all variants).

Certification

The package has previously been licensed under the requirements for the US DOT Specification 7A Type A Packages as defined in 49 CFR (HM 181) and the IAEA SSR-6 2018 Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material.

Description

The SAFDRUM^® CU112 is designed as a reusable package and manufactured from stainless steel to give a long service life.  The SAFDRUM^® CU112 consists of an Outer Drum (Design No CU112) which carries an inner Containment Vessel (CV) (either Design No CU105, CU110 or CU118) within polyethylene shock absorbing packing.

The SAFDRUM^® CU112 has a fabricated stainless steel body fitted with a bolted flange type lid.  The inner CV (Design No CU105, CU110 or CU118) are fabricated from stainless steel vessel with lead shielding and have a bolted flange closure fitted with an O–ring seal.

Containment / Shielding

The containment system consists of the inner CV, with the containment being provided by the welded stainless vessel walls and the bolted flange closure fitted with an O–ring seal.  The lid is provided with a test point for periodic leakage testing.  Secondary containment is provided by the product containers.  The CVs include lead shielding which range from 80 mm to
120 mm thickness.

Approved Contents

• Solid or liquid contents may be carried.  Suitable primary containers are required for liquid contents (within CU112B only).
• Radioactive contents are limited to A1 for material in special form and A2 for open form material, with the additional requirement that the external radiation levels of the package, during routine and normal conditions of transport, as loaded and presented for transport, are within regulatory limits.
