SAFDRUM® CU106A/B/C
Categories: General Purpose, Type A, Transport in USA, Type A
Package Type
Designed as a re-usable Type A package for the shipment of solids or liquids.
Certification
The package has previously been licensed under the requirements for the US DOT Specification 7A Type A Packages as defined in 49 CFR (HM 181) and the IAEA SSR-6 2018 Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material. Currently undergoing Type A recertification tests which will enable an increase range of contents to be transported.
Description
The SAFDRUM® CU106 is designed as a reusable package and manufactured from stainless steel to give a long service life. The SAFDRUM® CU106 consists of an Outer Drum (Design No CU106) which carries a Containment Vessel (CV) (either Design No CU116, CU107 or CU110) within polyethylene shock absorbing packing.
The SAFDRUM® CU106 has a fabricated stainless steel body and pressed steel lid held in place with a painted steel closure band. The inner CVs (Design Nos CU116, CU107 and CU110) are fabricated from stainless steel and have a bolted flange closure fitted with an O–ring seal.
Containment / Shielding
The containment system consists of the inner CV, with the containment being provided by the welded stainless vessel walls and the bolted flange closure fitted with an O–ring seal. The lid is provided with a test point for periodic leakage testing. Secondary containment is provided by the product containers.
The shielded inner CVs (Design Nos CU116 & CU110) include lead shielding which range from 80 mm to 120 mm thickness.
Approved Contents
- Radioactive material, in solid or liquid form. A variety of sealed primary containers can be used with liquid contents (e.g. vials), however absorbent material must be used with primary containers that are not sealed (e.g. syringes).
- Maximum liquid capacity is nominally 20 litres (within the CU106A, which has a CV volume of 28 litres).
- Radioactive contents are limited to A1 for material in special form and A2 for open form material, with the additional requirement that the external radiation levels of the package, as loaded and presented for transport, are within regulatory limits.
- The contents are also limited to A1 for material in special form and A2 for other material, with the additional requirement that the external radiation levels of the package, during routine and normal conditions of transport, as consigned for transport, are within regulatory limits.
Modes of Transport
By road, rail, sea and air.
